RESEARCH
Characteristics
Common characteristics of victorian period homes in the UK are bay, sash, and dormer windows, terracotta clay or slate roof tiles, brick exteriors, taller chimneys, triangular gables, balustrades, and rectangular fanlights above front doors.
History
Research was collected on two of the characteristics of Victorian homes; brickwork and roofs. This included historical facts, construction materials, and potential maintenance defects that could arise over time.
The targeted audience for these infographics is homeowners of Victorian period homes in the UK. Homeowners will need to understand not only the history behind the Victorian architectural style but its construction so that they will know what to observe and how to maintain its structure. These infographics focus on briefly educating the audience on the history, characteristics, and potential defects of their homes.
AUDIENCE AND USER NEEDS
Photographs were taken of Victorian homes in London neighbourhoods focusing on shots of the brickwork and roofs. These were then edited to remove the backgrounds and used to create the infographics along with the information that was collected. The colours were selected to pair with the photography and reflect the natural colours of the materials used in the construction. For the brickwork infographic a developing font inspired by brickwork patterns was created for the header.
